I am not a witness to this but I have heard from sources who are aware of this unbelievable practice.
This pertains to some of the roadside shelters for truck drivers along the highways in northern India. The shelters have string beds or 'khatias' for the truck drivers to rest at night.
The owners of these shelters employ some locals, whom they call 'khatmal khilane walas' (those who feed bed bugs). The job of the 'khatmal khilane wala' is to lie down on the beds for about an hour, early in the evening so that the bed bugs have their fill of human blood, so as to spare the truck drivers at night!
We have earlier heard of people in poverty tacking recourse to being professional blood donors. But this is new.

নন্দীগ্রামে ফিরিঙ্গী ফন্দী
নন্দীগ্রাম নিয়ে প্রচুর হই চই হল। এই ঘটনাক্রমের ব্যাপারে কয়েকটা জিনিস বড় আশ্চর্যের।
প্রথমত, সি পি আই (এম) -ই এত দিন কেন্দ্রিয় এস ই জেড নিতির বিরোধিতা করছিল। কেন্দ্র সরকার কান দিচ্ছিল না। অথচ যে ঘটনার ফলে শেষ পর্যন্ত এই নিতির পরিবর্তন করতে কেন্দ্র সচেতন হল সেটা ঘটল বামফ্রন্ট শাসিত পশ্চিম বঙ্গে!
দ্বিথীয়ত, যে গোষ্ঠীগুলো ভূমি সংস্কারের বিরোধী বাস্তুঘুঘুতে ভর্তি, সেই কংগ্রেস ও তৃনমূল-ই কিনা আজ কৃষক স্বার্থের রক্ষক হিসেবা নিজেদের পাশ করার চেষ্ঠা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে! তা তো হবেই - পঞ্চায়েতের নির্বাচন তো এলো বলে।
তৃথীয়ত, যে ধরনের পুলিশী অত্যাচারের বিরোধিতা সি পি আই (এম) করে থাকে - যেমন চন্দ্রবাবু নাইডুর আমলে হাইদ্রাবাদে বিদ্যুৎ দর বৃদ্ধীর বিরোধকারিদের ওপর গুলি চালানোর ঘটনা, বা হরিয়েনার গুরগাঁওতে হন্ডা ফ্যাক্ট্রির শ্রমিকদের ওপর পুলিশের নির্মম প্রহার। মানতেই হবে, তা আগে পরের ঘটনা যাই হোক, নন্দীগ্রামে পুলিশী অত্যাচার এর চেয়ে কোনো অংশে কম নয়। বিশেষ করে একটা দৃশ্য আমার চোখের সামনে থেকে সরছে না। লাঠি বা গুলির আঘাতে এক পুরুষ জমিতে পড়ে গেছে। আর তাকে তুলে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে দুই মহিলা। একটা পুলিশ এগিয়ে গিয়ে এই দুই মহিলার একজনকে লাঠির বাড়ি বেধড়ক পেঠাল। এটা কোনো উগ্র প্ররোচনায় লাঠি চালানো নয়। এটা সরাসরি পুলিশী আক্রমন! এবং আমি মনে করিনা যে এধরনের নির্মম পুলিশী অত্যাচারের বিরোধিতা করা বামফ্রন্ট সরকারের বিরোধিতা করার সমান।
আসলে আমার মতে বামফ্রন্ট সরকারের বিরুদ্ধে এক গভীর চক্রান্ত গড়ে উঠছে।

Need to Pee? Go to South Delhi!
That's true. If you need to relieve yourself in a respectable manner in a public space there is no respite but to be in South Delhi. or alternatively put only people in South Delhi have the right to relieve themselves in a respectable and hygienic manner. And it is only people in South Delhi who have the right to be spared the pleasure of witnessing others relieve themselves in full public view.
Over the last few years the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has come up with 'Pay and Use' toilets in the city - public toilets which are, for a change, clean. But unfortunately such toilets are only restricted to the elite confines of South Delhi and Lutyen's Delhi (the official hub of central Delhi).
It is not that there are no public loos elsewhere in Delhi. But they are a world's contrast to each other.
While the ones in South Delhi are well designed, well maintained and sport swanky glow signs the ones elsewhere (here is a picture of one in Old Delhi) leave little to imagination.
The South Delhi ones are decorated with suggestive signs indicating men's and women's rooms; are almost stenchless, have running water, if you are lucky they may also have liquid soap and a automatic hand dryer as well!
But their poorer cousins in the less fortunate parts of Delhi, make themselves conspicuous to the olfactory senses if not to the ocular ones.
A point, however, needs to be noted - it is only the swanky loos that recognise that women also need to and have a right to relieve themselves while on the move. But warped patriarchal attitudes fail not to chase them here as well - the 'Pay and Use' charges Re.1 for urinal and Rs.2 for latrine. But since, biologically, women have to visit the same closet for both kinds of excretion the 'men' at the counter seek to charge them 'Rs.2' irrespective of the kind of usage - thus, daring the women to argue in public with a 'man' that she had been to the closet for urinating and not for shitting!
The other point which needs to be noted, however, larger parts of the city actually have to do with out any kind of public toilet - whether swanky or run-down. The convenience of the 'jhari' or the bush, or the not so secluded rubbish dump is for everyone to 'Find and Use'.
The question ultimately is of the nature of development and the politics behind development which a modern city like New Delhi witnesses. Where there are, clearly, different benchmarks and standards of sanitation and civic infrastructure based on the class composition of different localities.

পেয়েছি! বাংলা ব্লগ পেয়েছি!
আমি বাংলা ব্লগ পেয়েছি।
অর্কুটে একটা কম্মুনিটি আছে 'বাংলা ব্লগ'। কিন্তু তাতে তিন চারজন সদস্য আছে মাত্র।
আরো খুঁজতে হবে।
ভালো হোলো এটা 'এপ্রিল ফুল' হয়ে গেল না।

আমি ঠিক করেছি যে আমি বাংলায় ব্লগ লিখবো। জানি না যে আর কোনো বাংলা ব্লগ আছে কিনা। খুঁজতে হবে। তবে এখন এই শুবিধে হয়ে গেছে। একদম সোজা।
আমি আমার কম্পুটারে "আভ্রো কিবোর্ড" ইন্সটল করেছি। গুগল-এ খুঁজে নিলেই হবে। আমি এতে ফোনেটিক টাইপ করি, অর্থাৎ আমি উচ্চারন অনুযাই ইংরেজি কিবোর্ডে টাইপ করি আর ছবিতে বাংলা দেখায়। বাংলা কিবোর্ড মুখস্ত করার কোন দরকার নেই! একটু অভ্যাস হয়ে গেলে বেশ তাড়াতাড়ি টাইপ করা যায়।
দেখি কেমন হয়ে।
